Southern Alberta Shoulder Screening Initiative
For an assessment at the Shoulder Screening Initiative, you require a referral from a physician. Self-referrals are not accepted.
You have been referred to Southern Alberta Shoulder Screening Initiative

Our assessment team reviews all incoming referrals. Since wait times are variable, you will be offered an appointment based on the appropriate time frame suggested by the information in the referral.

Once your referral is accepted, we will:

Notify your referring practitioner and provide them with an approximate wait time for an appointment.

Once your appointment is confirmed, we will: ​

notify your Family Physician or referring practitioner.

email you a parking pass and directions to the clinic.

send you a link to complete the required intake forms for your appointment.

send a reminder three business days before your appointment from our automated system.

If you cannot attend your appointment, you must notify us by telephone as soon as possible to be eligible to reschedule it.
What to expect at your Southern Alberta Shoulder Screening Initiative appointment
Appointments usually take 45 – 60 minutes to complete. A physiotherapist or athletic therapist and a physician do the assessment. The physician, therapist, and patient will devise a recommended treatment plan.

Your appointment will consist of the following:

A medical history, including a review of your current and past health history.

A history of the existing shoulder problem you are being referred for.

A thorough physical exam of your shoulder and adjacent areas (i.e. neck, upper back).

An explanation of the findings and how they relate to your current shoulder problems.

Recommendations for future management. This may include one or more of the following:

Referral for rehabilitation (i.e. physiotherapy).

Recommendation for pain management.

Referral for further diagnostic imaging.

Referral to an orthopaedic surgeon or another specialist.

A letter summarizing the appointment and treatment recommendations will be sent to the referring practitioner and your family doctor.
To prepare for your appointment:

Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows us to examine your shoulder (e.g. sleeveless top).

If you have already been attending physiotherapy, please let us know who your therapist is when you book your appointment so we can request an update from them.
