What to expect at your Acute Knee Injury Clinic appointment

Appointments usually take 60 – 75 minutes to complete. The assessment is done by an Injury Care Coordinator (a physiotherapist, athletic therapist, or kinesiologist) and a physician. The physician, therapist, and patient will develop a recommended treatment plan.

Your appointment will consist of the following:

  • A medical history, including your current and past health history.

  • A history of the recent knee injury for which you are referred.

  • A thorough physical exam of your knee.

  • Please wear or bring shorts or loose-fitting pants that can be rolled up for your knee to be examined appropriately.

  • An explanation of the clinical findings and how they relate to your knee injury.

  • The physician, clinician, and patient will develop a recommended treatment plan:

    • for rehabilitation (i.e. physiotherapy)

    • for further diagnostic imaging

    • for a specialized brace

    • to an orthopaedic surgeon or another specialist

A letter summarizing the appointment and treatment recommendations will be sent to the referring practitioner and your family doctor.
